Porta a Mare: mooring of the future

Livorno Porta a Mare

The ancient port of Livorno is about to enter a phase of great transformation. Part of an urban renewal project that will give the Tuscan city a waterfront of excellence, where the link between land and sea will be the protagonist.

The project takes shape on the ancient port of Livorno, it aims to revitalize the entire area of the archipelago according to an innovative concept, but strongly integrated in the local context. Porta a Mare is proposed as a chance for the whole city, from which it will be dropped, it will be an element of exploitation and will be aimed at all tagert users so that it can be lived on a full scale.

The entire project, which has an intervention area of 70,000 sqms, consists of five areas that meet the evolving needs of users:

  • Piazza Mazzini: this area will be dedicated to the creation of residences that will be developed in harmony with the surrounding environment, with large terraces and at a short walk from the sea;
  • Officine Storiche: once it was the workshop of the shipyard in Livorno, this area will house offices, commercial activities integrated into the city with high dedication to service, to boating and to the excellence of the territory;
  • Molo Mediceo: it will be the soul of the touristic port. Bars, restaurants, shops, residences and other facilities for recreational boating make this area unique and particularly attractive. Old and new merge here, thanks to the recovery of signs of past architecture and implementation of a new center of life and meeting for the city;
  • Arsenale: this area will host tourists facilities and hotels;
  • Area LIPS: it will be a large area dedicated to accommodation for leisure and recreation, as well as tourism infrastructures.

The development of the project will consist of two phases: the first one on Piazza Mazzini and Officine Storiche. The second one, however, will affect the area LIPS, the Arsenale and the Molo Mediceo, with a completely independent development of the work due to geographic positioning and to the possibility of exclusive access.

Particular attention should be given to Palazzo Orlando, a prestigious nineteenth century building situated between Piazza Mazzini and the sea which it overlooks. Three floors of offices and cabinets are ready to host tertiary activities in a strategic position both for the ancient heart of the city and for the new touristic port of the residential area which is being constructed.
